About Us
MarShelle Jacobs and her husband Tom are the founders of Ella's Emporium. It was MarShelle's idea to start an on-line company, and Tom thought that handbags, purses, and totes would be the right way to go. MarShelle picked "Ella's Emporium" for the name, and they made their little foot-tall ostrich, Ella, the Chairman of the Board, a position Ella takes very seriously. She makes sure everyone works hard. As VP for Marketing, Tom writes the words, chooses handbags ( with a lot of input from MarShelle), and designs graphics. MarShelle is the computer whiz, and she handles the website, technical problems, turning the graphic designs into reality, and finance. Both of them are long-time veterans of the business world, in Fortune 100 companies and small businesses alike. Their personal interests and concerns are so wide-ranging that it would take ten pages just to catalog them.
MarShelle and Tom have a staff of friends who handle packaging and shipping, accounting, and other aspects of the business. They decided early that they would not allow the usual on-line business practice of asking wholesalers and manufacturers to "drop-ship" to their customers. They wanted to inspect each handbag, purse, and tote themselves, then package each one carefully and ship it out, making sure their customers were treated as friends, not just names on billing statements. So paying friends to help run the company was a natural thing to do. They answer the telephones and e-mails themselves - no voice mail menus - and are "hands-on" with every aspect of everything they do. It all shows in the quality of products and service that you get from "Ella's Emporium".
